Carraro Drive Tech part-
nered with Italy-based Torotrak
to develop the VaryT transmission,
which combines Torotrak’s full-toroidal traction drive
and a continuously variable ratio. The VaryT is targeted to-
ward agricultural applications.
BY IAN CAMERON Carraro DriveTech has introduced what it said is a more efficient ransmission. Working with Italian
manufacturer Torotrak — a licensee of
U.K.-based full-toroidal traction drive
technology and a developer and producer of agricultural and material handling
transmissions — Carraro Drive Tech produced the Vary T toroidal infinitely variable transmission concept, designed to
reduce fuel consumption and carbon
dioxide emissions while also increasing
productivity and driver comfort.
The Vary T range of transaxles (
combining a stepless transmission and the
vehicle axle in one unit) uses Torotrak’s
full-toroidal traction drive to deliver benefits over other variable drive offerings,
Torotrak said. Using Torotrak technology,
the Vary T transmission ratio is continuously variable and independent of
engine speed to boost productivity
through optimized fuel economy, according to the company. It also allows full
traction capability at zero ground speed.
Torotrak said control of the vehicle is
simple, with seamless transitions from
forward to neutral to reverse. Lower

noise levels, the elimination of launch
or reversing clutches and the inclusion
of features such as accurate cruise
control — even at working speeds irrespective of external load conditions —
reduce driver fatigue to allow longer
continuous working time with improved
levels of safety and productivity, Torotrak said.
Carraro DriveTech said it chose
Torotrak’s technology to address the
growing demand for improvements in
fuel economy, emissions and productivity in the agricultural vehicle market.
Carraro also confirmed its intention to
develop a family of Vary T transaxles over
the next five years for use in a wide
range of agricultural tractors and specialized vehicles rated 29. 8 k W to more than
119.3 k W, including lighter tractors, such
as those used in orchards, through to
more complex and specialized off-highway applications. ;
