Mecalac Ahlmann. The Mecalac 12MTX is a compact 9 ton
multipurpose excavator often used for public works and urban
construction projects.
Max Boni, Mecalac’s R&D manager, said the company real-
ized the great potential of downsizing the diesel engine with the
adoption of a hybrid drive. “Mecalac analyzed the work cycle of
an excavator like the 12MTX and ascertained that it never oper-
ates at full power for continuous periods, but its typical working
cycle demands an average power of 51 k W.”
The excavator in the conventional diesel model features a 74
k W Cummins diesel engine. In the hybrid version, the 12MTX
excavator combines a turbocharged 51 k W Cummins diesel
engine with a Heinzmann electrical motor/generator delivering
15 k W ( 30 k W peak power). The system is completed by a 400
V Li-ion battery to store excess energy and a brake energy
recovery function.
Boni said one key concept of this new machine is, “The fact
that the hydraulic excavator is powered by a 51 k W diesel
engine — well below the threshold of 56 k W set by the Tier 4
and Stage 3b emissions regulations to come into force in 2012
— means that the machine will be spared an aftertreatment to
meet the very strict NOx emissions limits.
“This, combined with the reduced sound emissions derived
by the use of a smaller engine and a silent electric motor,
makes this machine ideal for working in urban and residential
areas,” Boni added.
Mecalac expects the 12MTX hybrid excavator to be commercially available within 2010. ;
The Heinzmann 15 k W
electric motor/generator is coupled to a 51
kW turbocharged diesel
by Cummins. This configuration takes only 80 mm
more space in length
than the conventional combustion engine,
Heinzmann
said.
Marine Emergency Drive Systems
Steyr Motors has introduced a
mechanical emergency drive system
(EDS) for its electronically controlled
marine diesel engines. The system allows
boat owners to engage a mechanical rack
mover by shifting a cable, in the event of
an emergency. The EDS will enable the Steyr engine to run the boat home
on a safety mode. It is available for the entire range of Steyr Marine four-and six-cylinder diesel engines, based on monoblock and high-pressure
unit injector technology.
Gauges For Pressure Instrument Testing
Ashcroft has introduced the Type 1082
and 1084 test gauges developed for testing
and certifying pressure monitoring devices.
The 1082 is available in 11. 43, 15. 24 and
21.59 cm diameters and has a ±0.25% FS
accuracy in ranges from vacuum through
689.47 bar. Other features include an external zero adjuster, temperature compensation and Monel wetted parts. The 1084 7.62 cm test
gauge is the smallest portable master gauge Ashcroft offers and is
capable of covering ranges to 68.95 bar with 0.5% FS accuracy.
