BY IAN CAMERON Atlas Copco has introduced its new, top-of-the-range QAS 500 genera- tor set rated 400 k W, 500 kVA
prime power at 50 Hz (457 k W, 575 kVA at
60 Hz) and aimed at industrial, rental, construction site and public utility applications.
It joins the QAS range, which already
includes a series of models rated
between 14 and 571 kVA.
The new set is powered by a six-cylinder, direct-injection, turbocharged inter-cooled Volvo TAD1641GE diesel engine,
driving a Leroy Somer alternator. A high-performance radiator with high-capacity
cooling is also fitted for 100% prime
power at 50 Hz, said Atlas Copco, with
operation in ambient temperatures up to
40°C and 1000 m altitude.
The QAS 500 is housed in a noise-attenuated enclosure made from zinc-plated steel and finished with powder
coating paint. The company said it meets
a sound power level of 99 dB(A) at 50

Hz, making it suitable for applications in
noise-sensitive areas.
Generator control, protection and monitoring are provided with a local- or
remote-start digital control module
(Qc1002). All Qc controllers are equipped
with external communication protocols
to support the Cosmos option for satellite monitoring.
The Qc4002 controller is available as
an option for multistart paralleling operations. As standard, this controller is
equipped with a power management
system that enables the user to save fuel
and extend the life of the engine, said
Atlas Copco.
Critical engine parameters such as oil
temperature, oil pressure and coolant
temperature are also monitored, the
company said. Should a sensor or transducer fail, the system automatically shuts
down to avoid any damage to the engine.
Atlas Copco said a dual-stage fuel
filter with integrated water separator
and a heavy-duty dual-stage air filtration system ensure longer service
intervals and increased engine life and
uptime. An extra safety cartridge filter
element allows air filter replacement
during operation.
The set has a 905 L standard fuel
tank, and external drain points are positioned to allow efficient draining of oil,
coolant and fuel with minimized risk of
environmental spillage. Special drain
points are also fitted to allow the fuel tank
to be cleaned and water removed from
the base frame.
Regarding options, Atlas said Type
CEE socket panels are available and, to
increase flexibility, a combination of different three-phase socket sizes is available. Spark arrestor, air inlet shutdown
valve and quick couplings for an external
fuel tank are also available. ;
